Hi, I am Mei-Chin. I am a data scientist, who enjoy solving scientific questions using data, algorithms and computation.
Working in this field has shaped how I think about AI and how it’s perceived today. AI has become such a buzz word today that we equate AI to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. While language-based Generative AI has captured the world’s imagination in the past few years, it is important to note that AI is much broader than these applications. Many people perceive AI as magical and even omnipotent, but this perception is far from reality.
So what is AI, really? At its core, AI is an interdisciplinary field that brings together mathematics, statistics, computer science, linguistics and engineering. In contrast to traditional software development, where programs follow explicit rules (if X, then Y), AI systems learn patterns and relationships from data through algorithms grounded in mathematical and statistical principles.
These are the ideas and questions that fascinate me, and this blog is where I document my exploration and understanding. Welcome to my personal blog! Here I write about topics that I am passionate about, from science and computing to travel photography and personal reflections.
I have been an avid reader and a passionate coder for many years. For me, reading has always been a source of knowledge and inspiration, while coding has been an outlet to express my creativity towards figuring out complex scientific problems. In fact, I have read more than 3000 papers, technical reports and books related to scientific computing, data science, machine learning, and AI algorithms. Sounds like a lot, right? But I believe that reading is a lifelong journey and there is always something new to learn and discover.
Beyond my professional interests, I have also travelled to more than 55 countries around the world, from snorkeling with the sea turtles in the Galápagos Islands, watching the Northern Lights in Iceland, climbing stratovolcanoes in Guatemala, living with host families in Japan to exploring the history of the Balkan countries.
One of my new year’s resolutions in 2026 is to start sharing my learnings and reflections from reading and travel impressions. I hope that this blog can spark curiosity, encourage exploration, and connect with others who share a passion for lifelong learning, travel and photography.
